Contingency Plans
Enter the technology age. Reliance on computers, database and telephones. And the ability to outsource and centralize critical functions. But as we reduce redundancy in orgranizations, we increase the risk on new dependencies. It's not so easy to piggy-back on the department next door, when they no longer exist. During the 1980's and late-1990's, disaster recovery was the focus in this arena. Companies like Comdisco and SunGard sprung up to fill a need. Since that time however, business planners found that the business risk of disruption was too great to neglect a long-term or some-times short-term outage without a contingency plan to resume operations at another location to minimize the disruption to core business practices. Strking A Balance A business continuity plan is a blue-print for an event that may or may not occur. A careful review of the cost-benefit of these plans should be done by upper management. In large organizations, full-time staff can be dedicated to CP. In smaller organizations, it is a part-time function. Project Managment and Contingeny Planning All of the ingredients that consitute an excellent project planning process -- are similar if not identical to contingency planning. And given the need to produce these plans in an efficent manner, project managers are excellent resources in this otherwise specialized area. How To Make Contingency Planning A Valuable Activity In Your Organization Plans must be renewable and testing them must have some value other than to test a plan that may never be used. Two Critical Dependencies In any plan, in any situation -- the two critical dependencies that should always be considered are communications and power. Pre-Defined Communication Structures Pre-Defined communications structure are critical for any contingency plan. The organization should include nodal points, in this case, tenants at airport terminals to more efficently handle call lists, notifications and checks. |
